Prominent Pilgrimage Attractions of Chidambaram
Sabhanayaka Nataraja Temple
This is the original
temple dedicated
to the Nataraja
form of Lord Siva
(the Celestial Dancer),
where Lord Siva
is found in his
famous Ananda Tandavam
dancing pose, with
one leg in the air
and having four
arms. He defeated
goddess Kali in
a dance contest.
It is a huge temple,
which takes up an
area of about 40
acres.
The roof of the
sanctum sanctorum
is covered with
gold plates. The
presiding deity
of the temple is
represented by air,
one of the five
elements of the
universe and is
known as Akasa Lingam.
The Eastern tower rises to a height of 40.8 metres. 108 Bharathanatyam dance gestures can be seen on the eastern tower as well as on the western tower. The northern tower rises to a height of 42.4 metres.

The Thillaikaliamman
